The word fake means 'to imitate fraudulently’ or ‘not genuine’ and can be applied to describe various items of supposed ‘Carlton Ware’ often seen for sale at markets, boot fairs and auctions, especially on eBay.
Through its website Carlton Ware World Wide (CW3) will keep collectors supplied with up to date illustrated information on such deceitful wares.
Presently, fakes fall into one of two categories
- Fakes in shapes never produced by Carlton Ware
- Fakes in shapes originally made by Carlton Ware. To date these are made from original moulds that have found there way into unscrupulous hands. They are more difficult to detect. Wherever possible CW3 plans to show an original item next to a fake so that differences can be seen.
We will list fakes under “Fake” and “never produced” as separate categories.
Perhaps the most well-known Carlton Ware fakes are the Guinness advertising wares. Although these have been made for ten years or so we will show them because there are still many new and unsuspecting collectors and dealers who are unaware that they are not genuine Carlton Ware.
No-one is safe, even dealers who have been handling Carlton Ware for many years can and are still getting caught out. You can see good pictures of the original wares at the Guinness club’s excellent web site. Guinness fakes are also shown on our site.
